Is the editorial cartoon dead, replaced in the minds of today’s and tomorrow’s readers by the do-it-yourself method of sticking words in Impact font over a limited selection of photos? I ask myself this from time to time, most recently because the Great Grey Lady of New York, the self-styled newspaper of record of the US, of Earth, of (to hear them tell it) at least the inner solar system, decided to end the contracts of its two editorial cartoonists after a furor boiled up (the paper denies the connection) over a cartoon that neither of them drew
