Acosta’s brash and unrelenting (good qualities in a press-pack “news conference”) and Trump’s revoking of his White House press privileges was petty and ultimately counterproductive (not to mention the irony of Trump defending civility). But claiming this is a Constitutional press freedom and due process event, as Acosta does in his lawsuit against the Trump White House, devalues the First and Fifth Amendment protections and has the potential to weaken them when (not if) they’re needed.
